Gazing at the sky to count stars is a fun and outdoor educational activity. NASA historically launched NASA's Star Count program to make stargazing merrier. Participants (mostly kids) in the program vie for the highest number of counted stars.
The best time to count stars is on a clear, moonless night when the sky is free of clouds and the moon. Moon radiance blocks stars from sight and results in fewer noticeable stars. A crescent moon or half moon results in less obstruction to stargazing than a full moon.
